Nattokinase is a protease enzyme (= breaks down proteins) produced by the bacterium Bacillus subtillis found in Natto, a food widely consumed by the Japanese. The presence of nattokinase in blood plasma peaks approximately 12 hours after oral ingestion. Taking nattokinase at a dose of 2,000 FU of fibrinolytic enzyme activity per day for two months has been shown to reduce plasma levels of fibrinogen and coagulation factors VII and VIII, three hematological factors that, if elevated, significantly increase the risk of blood clot formation.

It has a powerful fibrinolytic and anti-inflammatory activity. It can act to break down fibrin (fibrinolysis), which means it improves blood flow, reducing the risk of cardiovascular problems caused by excess fibrinogen – fibrin is a protein that helps form clots in the event of bleeding. Furthermore, its anti-inflammatory action has proven useful in atherosclerosis and hypertension.
It has an anti-thrombotic effect, that is, it is capable of breaking up clots or thrombi.

It is important to clarify that nattokinase does not interfere with the lipid profile, and therefore does not reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease associated with high blood levels of cholesterol or triglycerides.
