Magnesium is a nutrient that is involved in hundreds of metabolic reactions. An adult body has about 25g of this micronutrient, of which about 60% is found in bones, 27% in muscles, 7% in cells and less than 1% is found outside of them. The result of this division is its involvement in functions such as energy production, DNA, RNA and protein synthesis, and iron transport across cell membranes.

Magnesium deficiency is rare, as the mineral is abundant in foods of plant and animal origin. However, we should be aware of diseases that increase the risk of magnesium deficiency – such as Crohn's disease, malabsorption syndrome, celiac disease, kidney disease and chronic alcoholism.

The recommended daily intake for men and women aged 19 to 30 is 400 and 310 mg, respectively. For those over 30, the daily recommendation increases to 420 mg for men and 320 mg for women.

Magnesium is an essential mineral for energy production and metabolism, transmission of nerve impulses, bone mineralization, muscle contraction and normal heart rhythm. It is a necessary cofactor for an estimated 300 metabolic reactions.

Magnesium is also important for regulating calcium balance. Inadequate magnesium levels can cause decreased calcium levels and resistance to the action of parathyroid hormone and vitamin D. All of these factors can lead to increased bone loss. There are some physical conditions and special populations that generally have magnesium levels below those recommended, so supplementation is recommended in the case of:

  • Gastrointestinal diseases – prolonged diarrhea, Crohn's disease, malabsorption syndromes and surgical removal of part of the intestine
  • Kidney diseases – diabetes and prolonged use of diuretics result in increased elimination of Magnesium.
  • Chronic alcoholism – poor and unbalanced diet, gastrointestinal problems, loss of magnesium through urine, all these factors contribute to the possibility that alcoholic patients may have a magnesium deficiency.
  • 3rd age - Since intestinal absorption of magnesium tends to decrease with age, and urinary elimination increases, magnesium supplementation is advisable for older people.
